Favorite Memory from Barnard?
Spring semester of my first year, one of my roommates (Annell Ovalles BC’15) and I walked around all over midtown getting free macaroons on Free Macaroon Day. It’d finally become warm enough to enjoy the city, and we had so much fun getting off campus and eating delicious macaroons; it really felt like we were getting a real Barnard College (in the City of New York) experience!
Biggest Leap of Faith During College?
At the end of my very first semester, I finished my Intro to Linguistics class and knew then that I wanted to make Linguistics my major. There isn’t any Linguistics major at Barnard (or indeed, at Columbia, yet), but there were courses offered, and so I petitioned for and made it my major. The ling classes that I was able to take over the rest of my undergraduate career were so interesting, rewarding, and honestly – fun. It stung sometimes to not belong to a department – I missed out on things like departmental honors awards and invitations to hors d’oeuvres with President Spar (invites are sent by department), on open houses and program planning meetings… And it was doubly hard to complete my pre-medical requirements and the Nine Ways of Knowing given that there was no overlap with my major, but I can’t regret studying what I did, and writing the thesis I wanted to and being the kind of student who does things just a little bit differently.
