Sexual Health: Staying Sexy at Barnard

by Molly Scott

They’re here to make lovin’ easier.

Many of us don’t realize how lucky we are to live on a campus that is full of sexual health resources. From the information and forms of protection and birth control that can found at Well Woman, to Plan B that can be found at Primary Care Health Services, there are plenty of places on campus that have your back. Since there are so many birth control options out there, we’ve made this guide to the options that are available to you on Barnard’s campus.

Well Woman

The following are free and are waiting for you in a basket outside their office (first floor of Reid):

Condoms – The best way to protect yourself from STIs and pregnancy.

Female Condoms – This type of condom goes inside the vagina and helps to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of STIs.

Dental Dams – A barrier method used for oral sex. It helps reduces the transmission of STIs which can be spread during oral sexual activity.

A TON of info – Well-Woman has books and pamphlets filled with info on the many types of protection that are available! The staff is also very well versed on sexual health topics, so drop by to ask them anything you’re curious about (seriously, anything). These staff members can also teach you how to use various protection and birth control methods.

GYN Ed Session – Every Tuesday at 6:30pm, staff members at Well-Woman teach students what it’s like to have a gynecological exam. A smart idea if you’ve never had one and think you should see a gynecologist.

Primary Care Health Services

Information, Advice, Prescriptions and Health Care – You can make an appointment at Primary Care to discuss going on a certain kind of birth control (such as the pill, an IUD, a vaginal ring, a birth control sponge, etc.) and your sexual health in general. They are an amazing resource that should be taken advantage of during your time at Barnard.

Emergency Contraception – Plan B (the morning after pill) is available for purchase at Primary Care. You can visit them during walk-in hours for this, and you can ask for a small supply to keep for the future. Plan B is much cheaper here than at most pharmacies.

Free HIV Testing – If you want to get tested, it is free and confidential at Primary Care.

Free and Confidential Pregnancy Testing – If you suspect you are pregnant, Primary Care is a great resource because you can take a test without judgment and it’s confidential and free. If you are pregnant, they will help you find resources to make the decision that’s best for you.

Abortion Referrals – This service is free and confidential as well. They can help you make a decision, help you find providers, and give you information about insurance.

  1. There are some really loved reading your blog. It was very well authored and easy to understand. Unlike additional blogs I have read which are really not good. I also found your posts very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well!
