Every first Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day, and many comic book shops in New York are participating. Whether you’ve been comic book fan since you before you knew how to read, or you’ve never read one and are looking to give comic books a shot, this would be the day to go.
As an added bonus, Midtown Comics Downtown on Fulton Street will be even having some creator signings for the day! All of them will be signing on the second half of the day, so plan accordingly.
• 1:00 PM — Chris Eliopoulos and Nate Cosby, creators of Cow Boy (which is nominated for an Eisner award!)
• 3:00 PM — Archie Comics presents writer Alex Simmons and artist Jamal Peppers
• 7:00PM to 9:00PM — DC Comics presents Scott Snyder (the current writer of Batman) and Jim Lee signing Superman: Last Son of Krypton #1
Remember, though, that Free Comic Book Day isn’t exactly free. Gail Simone (the current writer of Batgirl and the first female writer of Wonder Woman) wrote on her facebook page that retailers have to pay a price for the free comic books, and there are other expenses these stores have to shoulder to make this day a success. Simone writes, “What I would ask everyone to do is, when you go to get your free comics, please take a little bit of extra time, even if it’s crowded, to shop in the store. Try a couple new comics off the rack or a new trade collection you have been thinking about.”
Saturday would be a great time to get some comics. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a series that you’ll like!
